Dr Sean Tromp is a neurosurgeon with training in general neurosurgery followed by three fellowships in skull base, pituitary and spinal surgery respectively. He has a special interest in epilepsy surgery.
While studying for his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from the University of Cape Town, he took an early interest in neurosurgery and served as student head of the Surgical Society.
After qualifying with distinction in his final clinical examinations in 2012, he went on to a two-year internship at the East London Hospital Complex, followed by a year of community service at the Kimberley Hospital Complex – equally split between general surgery and neurosurgery.
He then returned to Cape Town in 2016 to complete registrar training in the Division of Neurosurgery at both Groote Schuur and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospitals, qualifying as a Fellow of the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa in late 2019 and being appointed chief registrar.
Between April 2020 and December 2021, he completed two fellowships at Groote Schuur Hospital: skull-base neurosurgery, and open & endoscopic pituitary surgery. Then in 2022 he completed a six-month fellowship in orthopaedic spinal surgery. During this year he completed his MMed (Neurosurgery) from the University of Cape Town. He remains connected to the UCT Division of Neurosurgery as a sessional consultant.
Dr Tromp is fluent in English and Afrikaans and conversant in isiXhosa. Now at Mediclinic Constantiaberg full time, he is excited at the prospect of putting his expertise at the disposal of neurosurgery patients in Cape Town’s southern suburbs, the greater Western Cape and beyond.
Out of working hours, he enjoys carpentry, playing the guitar, and spending time outdoors with his wife and young daughter.
